Crazy Races: The Dipsea

Crazy Races: The Dipsea

Crazy as it may be, this race has history. This year The Dipsea Race was added to the list of the oldest races in the country, along with The Chicago Marathon. What makes it crazy? Check out these names for the aid stations along the course: Insult Hill, The Swoop, High Point, Cardiac, Hogsback, Dynamite, Suicide, Windy Gap, Dipsea Steps… (the Dipsea Steps sounds gentler than it is: 670 Steps looming over the starting line).

So… What is The Dipsea? n. (Pronounced Dip-See)

“First run in 1905, the Dipsea is the oldest trail race in America. It is run every year on the second Sunday in June. The scenic 7.4 mile course from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world. The stairs and steep trails make it a grueling and treacherous race. And its unique handicapping system has made winners of men and women of all ages. Because of its beauty and challenge, it is a very popular event, and because of safety and environmental concerns the number of runners is limited to about 1,500. While racers enter from all over the world, the Dipsea is primarily a Northern California event and the entry process is tilted slightly to favor local contestants.” (http://www.dipsea.org/index.html)

The Dipsea sells out fast, and registration is only open for about a month. After that bibs go on sale through craigslist, a lottery, or a silent auction. Next year’s Dipsea race is about 350 days away… better hit the stair stepper!

FYI, anyone caught buying, selling or exchanging bibs will be banned from the Dipsea for life. I know of someone that was caught. So you might want to be careful.
